Walking
The diverse landscape of the Roe Valley offers a range of terrain and challenges. From ancient woodlands and heather covered mountains to beaches and riverside paths, there is something for every walker.
In the south of the Borough, the secretive Banagher Dam & Glen provides short but steep walk through the ancient oak woodland of Banagher Glen leading to the dam at Altnaheglish Reservoir. Cross over the hiding place of the mythical serpent Lig-na-Paiste on your ascent. A longer 14 kilometre route taking in the Banagher Forest is also available.
Benbradagh Mountain, at the gateway to Glenshane, is steeped in folklore from the story of Finvola, the Gem of the Roe and the banshee Grainne Rua. The summit offers a panorama over the Sperrins, Roe & Bann Valleys and to Donegal. Tannyranny Church is located on the north western shoulder of Benbradagh accessed by a short trail from the B64.
See if you can find the Mass Rock hidden along the trail in Glenshane Forest as the Ulster Way passes through the forest close to the source of the River Roe rising on White Mountain.
In the north Binevenagh Forest & Mountain offers fantastic views overlooking the north coast, Lough Foyle, Inishowen and Islay & Jura in the west of Scotland. Follow part of the Ulster Way to the easily recognisable flat summit of Binevenagh.
For a more sedate route, Boyd’s Riverside Walk provides a pleasant short route along the River Roe at Burnfoot village.
Roe Valley Country Park, just south of Limavady town, follows the Roe for three miles either side of the river. A variety of woodland paths allow for a peaceful walk or a chance to explore the historic heritage and natural environment of the park.
Ballykelly Forest provides short trails in the first piece of state forest in Northern Ireland. A favourite lair of the legendary highwayman, Shane Crossagh O’Mullan as the forest straddles the old Coleraine to Derry coach road.
