RNLI Portrush Raft Race Weekend

24-25 May 2008

Location: Portrush

Event Type: Family Entertainment

2007

Plans are well under way for the 27th Charity Raft Race in aid if the RNLI. This year the sponsors of the Raft Race are Asda.

The Raft Race traditionally signals the start of the summer season in Portrush and attracts people from all over Ireland (and from overseas) to come to Portrush with their homemade rafts.

The Raft Race raises approximately £25k for the RNLI each year and as well as the Raft Race there are lots of other attractions for all the family.

Saturday 24th May kicks off with the Junior Raft Race and Fancy Dress. There will be loads of stalls selling a variety of wares and there will be music playing all day until the main event.  A display of vintage cars and motorcycles will take place around Portrush arriving at the boathouse at 7pm approx.

The run up to the actual Raft Race involves an Air/Sea exercise with the two lifeboats and a Coastguard Helicopter. A Skydiving team helps to clear the beach for the start of the race and when the Big Army Field Gun on the North Pier is set off that's the signal for the Rafters to run with their rafts to the sea.

On Sunday 25th the Annual Thanksgiving Service for the work of the lifeboats and crews will be held in the Town hall at 2pm, featuring Ballywillan Concert Flute Band.

After this there will be a volleyball display on the beach. This is a new event for the raft race weekend and should appeal to all ages, as it will be a combination of music, skill and a chance to cheer on your team! Music provided by Waxjunkie from Club Soi.
