Kevin Welch in Concert

5 Oct 2010

Location: Portstewart

Event Type: Concert

Tuesday October 5th at 8pm

Kevin Welch returns to Portstewart to make his Flowerfield debut in support of his brand new album A Patch of Blue Sky - and to showcase some of his amazing songs and one of the finest voices in contemporary roots music.

Born in Long Beach, California in 1955, Welch's family settled in Oklahoma, before joining a bluegrass band, dropping out of school and hitting the road, putting in countless miles as a member of the bands New Rodeo and Blue Rose Cage.

Kevin moved to Nashville and signed with Tree International publishing in the late 70s, earning a living as a songwriter. Writers Steve Earle, Don Schlitz and others helped Kevin get his first record deal, with Warner Brothers, and released his self-titled debut and then Western Beat in 1990 and 1992.

Kieran Kane, Harry Stinson, Mike Henderson, Tammy Rogers, and Kevin drank so much vodka one night that they started their own label, Dead Reckoning Records. They released 21 records over the next 7 years, toured individually and also together throughout the U.S., U.K., Ireland, Europe, and Canada.

In 2000, Kevin and Kieran started traveling together with a 2-man show - 2 guitars, 2 voices. As a trio, Kane Welch Kaplin made two records, Lost John Dean, which bumped Bruce Springsteen out of number one, and Kane Welch Kaplin, which made it to number three but could not budge Steve Earle or Alison Krause/Robert Plant.

Kane Welch Kaplin were nominated for Duo/Group of the year in 2007 and again in 2008. Kevin now resides in a log cabin in some woods outside of Austin, Texas, and is getting ready to hit the road behind a brand new record called "A Patch Of Blue Sky".

Tickets are available from Flowerfield - call (028) 7083 1400 for details.
