From the Outside Looking In - prints by Lucy Turner

FLOWERFIELD welcomes an exciting exhibition of prints from artist Lucy Turner, with a special drinks reception on Saturday February 11th to mark the opening.

Join us from 12noon through until 4pm on Saturday the 11th to celebrate the opening of this exhibition, which runs under the title From the Outside Looking In.

Lucy is a printmaker who makes use of traditional methods combined with contemporary technology to create varying print styles. She often prints onto metals, and uses lacquers for protection on top of the printed metals - this also allows the semi reflective qualities of the metal to be seen.

She considers it important when designing art for public spaces to create art with input from the people who will interact with it. She works with community arts, children and adults with varying abilities

“Advancements in technology connect us more immediately with events around the globe,” explains the artist. “Environmental disasters on the other side of the world are in our living rooms within minutes of happening and we observe their destructive force with a paradoxical blend of awe and shock. The fragility of life affects and informs us all.”

These new works on paper, she goes on, originated from ‘clippings’ from the net, TV and newspapers of environmental events: “Sea of Debris is a response to real-time footage of the recent seismic upheaval in Japan. An Arts Council travel award to post-Katrina New Orleans inspired ‘Swinging from the Chandelier’ signifying the dynamic meeting of opulence and ruin.”

This exhibition – which continues on show at Flowerfield until March 2nd - is a combination of data collated from external media and personal stories. Images of inanimate household objects, discovered mainly by chance, have been created through a collaboration of colour, texture and process. “The domestic and dramatic are interwoven within the compositions,” says Lucy, “suggesting that the ‘normality’ we take for granted is fragile in the face of the forces of nature.”

Join us on Saturday February 11th from 12noon for a drinks reception to welcome the new exhibition, where visitors can meet the artist and see the work at close quarters. The exhibition is on show in the galleries at Flowerfield from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday and from 10am to 1pm on Saturdays. Admission is free, and the galleries are also open late on evenings when Creative Classes for Adults are taking place in the building.
